Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

In the TU/e community of students and staff, we strive for diversity. A strong and welcoming community promotes inclusiveness, equality and cooperation. Diversity adds to our success and pleasure in education and research. It broadens our research scope and enhances the quality of our education. Therefore, we welcome people from all backgrounds and without regard to sex, gender, ethnicity, nationality, age, socio-economic status, identity, visible or invisible disability, religion, or sexual orientation. Inclusion is a way of dealing with each other that is necessary to achieve the best results.

At the International CBL Conference we are committed to empowering equity, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of our community.

Inclusive language & interaction

Interaction and language play a crucial role in events where we aim to connect with and learn from others. Therefore, we encourage all attendees to adopt inclusive language and interaction practices throughout the conference.

When everyone feels represented and respected, they are more likely to actively engage in discussions, share insights and connect with others. Inclusive language practices promote mutual understanding and foster a culture of learning.

We like to encourage you to:

  • Engage with diverse groups: Make an effort to interact with people from different backgrounds, industries, and roles.  This can lead to richer conversations and networking opportunities.
  • Be open-minded: Avoid assumptions. Approach every interaction with an open mind and be willing to learn from others' perspectives and experiences.
  • Acknowledge diversity: Be mindful of cultural and linguistic differences and use language that is accessible to everyone, avoiding extensive jargon or idiomatic expressions that may not be universally understood. English is the common language during the conference.
  • Respect pronouns and include everyone: Use the correct pronouns for everyone. If you're unsure, politely ask. Be neutral when speaking to groups of people. Talk to your audience by saying 'welcome participants' instead of 'welcome ladies and gentlemen'.
  • Listen actively: Pay attention to what others are saying without interrupting. Show that you value their input by nodding and providing thoughtful responses.
  • Create space for everyone: Ensure that quieter or less confident attendees have the opportunity to speak and contribute.
  • Be aware of accessibility needs:  Be aware of the physical and sensory needs of others. If you notice someone who might need assistance, offer help in a respectful manner.
  • Challenge discrimination: Support those who are being marginalized. If you witness any form of discrimination or exclusion, address it calmly and assertively.

By committing to inclusive language and interaction practices, we not only enhance our conference experience but also contribute to a broader culture of inclusion in academia.
